Mekedatu Trip: Overview
Weekday departures require a minimum of 6 people.About the Mekedatu One-Day Trip:
Mekedatu is situated along the Kaveri River right on the border of Karnataka's Chamarajanagar and Ramanagara districts. Located roughly 95 km away, it is one of the most popular One Day Trips From Bangalore for nature lovers and weekend explorers.
Approximately 3.5 kilometres downstream from the river confluence at Sangama, the Kaveri rushes through a spectacular, deep, and narrow ravine carved out of hard granite rock. The name ‘Mekedatu’ translates literally to ‘goat’s leap’ in Kannada, originating from local lore where a nimble goat chased by a tiger escaped by boldly leaping across the narrow gorge, leaving the tiger behind.
At Sangama, where the Arkavathi joins the Kaveri, the river spans more than 150 metres wide before dramatically narrowing down to barely 10 metres at the gorge of Mekedatu. The journey to Mekedatu offers a relatively less crowded route, accessible by road while the stretch from Sangama can also be traversed on foot.
The surrounding rocky landscape transforms into vibrant greenery during the monsoon season, when the river swells with heavy currents and forceful cascades. In contrast, the summer season brings lower water levels that make walking along the exposed riverbed easier. Both seasons provide distinct, captivating outdoor experiences.
